About this group
A number of prominent AI researchers, philosophers, industry professionals, and even the leadership of some of the largest artificial intelligence companies in the world, have all acknowledged that there are credible extinction risks associated with the development of superintelligence. This is not a Liverpool problem, or even a British problem, but one that could impact the entire human race.
We meet regularly to discuss these risks and to coordinate peaceful but effective actions to raise public and political awareness and, ideally, to impact the direction of AI regulations in a way that keeps human control as a priority. The main monthly meeting will take place at a central Liverpool bar, but there will also be the opportunity for online sessions and larger, community-based events hosted at nearby educational institutions.
You do not need to be an AI or politics expert, or to be able to commit to every single meeting, to join and to begin to make a collective change. Once you’ve joined the group, I’d recommend joining the WhatsApp Community to stay in the loop.
If you want to get more directly involved as an admin or a core member of the team, feel free to contact me at:callumlgrady@gmail.com.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a background in AI, coding, or politics to join?
Absolutely not!
You don’t need to be a political scientist or a technical expert to be affected by the risks of superintelligence. To drive tangible, meaningful change, we need people from all walks of life, regardless of job title or life stage.
What actually happens at your meetings?
Our monthly meeting takes place at a central Liverpool bar, so the atmosphere is generally very relaxed and welcoming. Our discussions centre around AI safety and the latest updates on relevant global policy and advocacy, as well as coordination of our own actions and campaigns.
For those who can’t commit to a regular in-person session, we will also be hosting online sessions and occasional larger community events at nearby educational institutions.
Do I have to commit to coming to every single meeting?
No commitment pressure.
Drop in whenever you can make it. We know that people have busy lives, careers, and studies. Even if you can only attend occasionally, your voice will still add value to the group conversations so don’t feel discouraged.
How do I stay updated between meetings?
The best way to stay in the loop is to join ourWhatsApp Community, the link of which is accessible from this page when you’ve joined the Action Group as a member. We’ll share action items, updates, reminders, links and, aside from that, it will provide you with a safe space to speak with likeminded people.
What kind of actions does the group take?
ControlAI has consistently proven the effectiveness of peaceful advocacy, and the Liverpool chapter operates no differently. We mainly aim to raise public and political awareness, engage with the local media and elected representatives, and collaborate with educational and community organisations.
How is this connected to the wider movement?
We are incredibly proud to be an official local chapter of the broaderControlAImovement. This means that, while our actions and advocacy are particularly concentrated on the Liverpool City Region, we share the overarching beliefs and values of ControlAI, particularly around the need to prevent human extinction risk from the development of superintelligence.
How can I get more involved or help run things?
There is never any pressure to get more involved, but if it’s something you’re interested in, we’re always looking for members who want to take on a direct role, whether that’s in events, marketing, organisation, or general administration. If you’re a student, we’re also looking for ControlAI Liverpool Action Group Campus Leads who can foster membership among their friends and classmates.
If interested in a direct role, contact the Group Lead, Callum, atcallumlgrady@gmail.com.
